Fenugreek seeds, one of the commonly used condiments has been found to possess effective qualities to counter diabetes according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
A decoction of fenugreek seeds, rich in fibre content, reduces blood sugar and urine sugar and relieves symptoms of diabetes. In addition, it contains trigonelline, an alkaloid, known to reduce blood sugar level. It also lowers the levels of serum lipids such as cholesterol and triglyceride, when used as a supportive therapy along with anti-diabetic treatment.
Interestingly, studies have shown that these aspects are not seen in the fenugreek leaves.
Fenugreek, scientifically known as Trigonella foenum graecum is known as Methi in Hindi and Gujarati, Mathika in Sanskrit, Mentikoora in Telugu and Uluva in Malayalam.
The seeds can be soaked in water overnight to be consumed the next day twice in water or in buttermilk.
Depending upon the severity of diabetes, 25 grams to 50 grams of the seeds, preferably powdered, if taken 15 minutes prior to meals is beneficial.
Fenugreek seeds as a seasoning condiment and also as an additive can be used in all forms of staple food preparations.
However, if patients develop diarrhoea or excess flatulence (gas formation), it is advisable to reduce the quantity of fenugreek intake.
